📰 News we're reading

1. MCE says it will offset recent PG&E electricity price hikes (marinij.com) — Mill Valley residents could see their MCE electricity bills rise about $20 to $30 a month compared with PG&E, but the agency plans to propose a rate cut in February to ease the hit. MCE leaders, including Mill Valley Mayor Max Perrey, say they remain focused on climate goals while weighing how much to trim generation charges and tap reserves.

2. In Your Town for Jan. 8, 2026 (marinij.com) — A proposed home expansion in Mill Valley’s Tamalpais Valley would add new living space, a small deck, and an accessory dwelling unit while replacing a carport with a two-car garage. County planners are still reviewing the 304 Deertrail Lane project and have not yet scheduled a public hearing, but details are already available online for neighbors who want a closer look.

3. You can visit 9 national parks in California for free in 2026. Here's when (sacbee.com) — Mill Valley residents can visit nearby Muir Woods National Monument for free on several 2026 fee-free days, along with other national parks across California. While entrance fees are waived for U.S. residents on those dates, visitors may still pay for camping, parking, and transportation, or opt for an America the Beautiful pass for broader year-round access.

4. Bay Area theater veteran named Lark Theater's new executive artistic director (marinij.com) — Mill Valley theatergoers may recognize Josh Costello from his recent revival of “Eureka Day” at Marin Theatre, and now he’s taking the reins at Larkspur’s historic Lark Theater. With deep Bay Area directing experience and a commitment to both live performance and eclectic film programming, he plans to build on the venue’s beloved offerings rather than overhaul them.
