Apartment Building Fire In Marin County Displaces Residents Despite Speedy Response: SMFD

Firefighters knocked down the fire in the three-story building located on a steep hill, which made access difficult, officials said.

SAUSALITO, CA — The occupants of an apartment building in Sausalito have been displaced from their home due to a fire Monday despite a quick response from firefighters, officials said.

At around 8:53 a.m. on Monday, Southern Marin Fire Department crews responded to a report of an apartment building fire in the area of Josephine Street in Sausalito.

Fire officials said the apartment was in a three-story hillside building and the fire originated in a unit two floors below street level. Fire crews quickly extinguished the flames while other firefighters searched the building for trapped victims.

Fire crews said the fire was knocked down 41 minutes after the first firefighters arrived on scene and that the steep hillside made access difficult.

There were no reported injuries but resident were displaced, officials said.

The Fire District stated they are working with the American Red Cross to assist the residents.

The incident is under investigation, but as of Tuesday morning, the SMFD believes it may have been started accidentally, officials said.
