Mountain View Apartment Fire Sparked By Badly Stored Chemicals
A fire caused an estimated $1 million in damage at a Mountain View apartment complex Saturday, officials said.
MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA — A fire that caused an estimated $1 million in damage at a Mountain View apartment complex Saturday was sparked by improperly stored wood-restoration chemicals, officials said.
The fire broke out around 1:24 p.m. in the 700 block of S. Oak Street. Residents had already evacuated the two-story, multi-family complex when fire crews arrived five minutes later and found flames coming from two second-floor units, according to firefighters.
Firefighters quickly contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading further.

Crews conducted extensive overhaul operations, using thermal imaging to ensure the fire had not extended behind walls or into the roof.
Seven adults from three affected units were displaced. Each received a $250 gift card from the California Professional Firefighters' SAVE program, and the American Red Cross was contacted to arrange temporary housing, officials noted.

One bystander was evaluated for minor injuries but declined transport, officials said.
The fire originated on a balcony where chemicals were improperly stored, investigators said.
The building was turned over to management after the scene was secured.
