📰 News we're reading

1. Mountain View historic register update stirs up controversy (losaltosonline.com) — Mountain View is moving to overhaul its historic places register, a change that could affect whether your property is listed and how easily it can be removed. City Council has ordered staff to tighten criteria and clarify the process, with a final vote expected next year. Some longtime residents and business owners are pushing back, arguing age alone shouldn’t make their buildings historic.

2. City of Mountain View partners with school district on $3.6M fix for crumbling creek banks (mv-voice.com) — Mountain View is moving ahead with a $3.6 million project to stabilize dangerously eroding Stevens Creek banks that threaten the Stevens Creek Trail and a nearby school campus. Partnering with Mountain View Whisman School District, the city will cover most costs and manage permits, construction, and long-term monitoring, with work expected to start next summer during the dry season.

3. Speiser elected vice president of board of education (losaltosonline.com) — Leadership at the Santa Clara County Board of Education just shifted, with Jessica Speiser, who represents an area including Mountain View’s school districts, elected vice president. Her new role, alongside president Victoria Chon, will shape county-level decisions affecting Mountain View Whisman and Mountain View–Los Altos schools in the coming year.

4. New look MV basketball gets ready for league season (losaltosonline.com) — Mountain View High’s boys basketball team is retooling after key graduations and a major transfer, leaning on speed, pressure defense, and new backcourt leaders to chase another CCS playoff berth. With SCVAL De Anza play looming in January, coach Kevin Mack says this smaller, hard-working group is focused on creating offense from defense and staying in the league’s top tier.

5. Housing advocates fall short in bids for Sierra Club leadership (mv-voice.com) — Mountain View Council member Lucas Ramirez joined a slate of pro-housing candidates who unsuccessfully tried to win leadership roles in the Sierra Club’s Loma Prieta Chapter, sparking unusually high turnout. The race highlighted tensions between traditional conservation priorities and newer activists who see dense housing as key to climate goals, with veteran, committee-backed candidates ultimately sweeping the seats.
