Big Rig Catches Fire On I-80, Slows Evening Commute

The blaze on eastbound Interstate 80 in Vallejo started to spread to nearby vegetation.

NORTH BAY, CA — A big rig caught fire Monday on Interstate 80 in Solano County causing traffic delays during the evening commute.

The incident was reported at 6:15 p.m. on eastbound I-80 east of Columbus Parkway and west of American Canyon Road. It blocked the two right lanes, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The big rig was fully engulfed in flames on the right shoulder and the fire started to spread to the adjacent hillside, CHP said.

No other vehicles were involved.

Witnesses reported that the semi-truck driver made it to safety and was standing about 12 feet from the truck as it went up flames.

By 6:34 p.m., the fire was extinguished.

A while later, by 8:15 p.m., all lanes were reopened.
