East Bay Man Suspected In Napa County Extortion Scheme: Police

It is alleged he convinced the victim he was with the U.S. Department of Treasury.

AMERICAN CANYON, CA — An East Bay man was arrested in connection with a scheme to extort an American Canyon resident.

Bhupiner Singh, 23, of Fremont, was taken into custody Tuesday in Martinez on suspicion of his involvement, American Canyon police said Wednesday.

Police launched an investigation when the resident informed them that his personal computer was hacked.

It is alleged that Singh and at least one other person convinced the victim they were with the U.S. Department of Treasury and tried to extort approximately $95,000 from the man.

Napa County Sheriff's Office detectives, the American Canyon Police Department and the Napa Special Investigations Bureau determined Singh was involved and arrested him in Martinez.

Detectives believe the suspects are involved in other extortion crimes in different jurisdictions.

Singh was booked into Napa County jail on suspicion of felony extortion, felony elder abuse and felony grand theft. He remained in custody Wednesday with bail set at $50,000.
