Opponent's Campaign Suspected Of Surveilling District 4 Mike Thompson’s Napa Valley Home: Report
Democrats' race for California's newly redrawn 4th Congressional District takes a bizarre turn: report.
NAPA VALLEY, CA —Federal police questioned a volunteer for the campaign of a challenger for the District 4 congressional seat after he parked outside the St. Helena home of longtime incumbent Mike Thompson, according to reports.
The investigation was triggered Oct. 5, when Thompson’s chief of staff informed U.S. Capitol Police that a black Subaru Forester with Nebraska tags was parked for “multiple hours” at the lawmaker’s Napa County residence, The Press Democrat reported.
“This is disturbing. It scared my wife, my granddaughter, who lives with us, and my neighbor who is a single woman living alone," Thompson said in a statement on his campaign website.

Investigators identified the person in the car as Spencer Fields, 19, originally from Nebraska, according to the Press Democrat, which said Fields told agents he was volunteering for the campaign of Eric Jones.
A campaign spokesperson for Jones dismissed the investigation as a non-event in a statement to The Press Democrat, saying that Congressman Thompson was trying to manufacture an issue where none existed.

Thompson said it was "hard to believe that anyone would think this was okay," given the terrible attack on Paul Pelosi and the recent increase in political violence against public officials. "I’m grateful to the law enforcement who have helped ensure my family and neighbors are safe and I remain focused on serving our community.”
Jones, 34, formerly a San Francisco-based financier and political newcomer, moved to Napa in 2021. District 4 includes all of Lake County and Napa County, and parts of Yolo, Solano, and Sonoma counties. Cities in the district include Davis, Woodland, Saint Helena, Napa, Vacaville, and most of Santa Rosa.
