UPDATE: 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013

The Napa man who was airlifted Thursday to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with major injuries after a head-on crash on Highway 29 near St. Helena is in fair condition and his prognosis is favorable, hospital officials said today.

Michael Schill, 58, of Napa, has been moved out of the intensive care unit, is now on a standard medical-surgical unit and his condition is stable, a hospital staff member said.

According to the California Highway Patrol report, Schill was driving a 1998 Dodge Ram Ex Cab pickup truck on Hwy. 29 northbound at an unknown rate of speed when he allowed his truck to cross over the double yellow lines into the southbound lane just north of Ehlers Lane near St. Helena.

That was directly into the path of a 2008 Columbia big rig driven by Malik Attiba, 63, of Bay Point.

Attiba also sustained major injuries and was transported by Queen of the Valley Medical Center by AMR ground ambulance. Hospital officials said Tuesday that he has been released.

Schill's 11-year-old male passenger sustained minor injuries and was also transported to Queen of the Valley.

Schill was transported to Santa Rosa by CHP Air Unit H-30.
