First responders are a vital part of our communities, keeping us safe and playing an integral role in daily life. Patch and T-Mobile have partnered on a Ride-Along series to showcase the important work these departments and individuals do every day.

We had the opportunity to speak with Battalion Chief Ty Becerra of the Napa Fire Department to learn more about the department, life as a firefighter and the impact of their work.

Can you tell us about the Napa Fire Department?

Chief Becerra: Napa City proper is approximately 18.5 square miles and is a
mixture of residential, commercial and tourist areas. It has a four-lane highway that runs
through the center and also has navigable waterways.

What does a typical day look like for a firefighter in Napa Valley?

Chief Becerra: Firefighters arrive to their respective stations and do shift exchange at 0800. They check out all the apparatus and gear to ensure readiness. They shop, then work out from 1000-1130. They typically train in the afternoon for two hours on a myriad of disciplines.

The crews eat dinner at around 6:00 p.m., then have the evening to themselves. Emergency calls come in during all these daily phases, and they must adjust their schedules as needed. The shift personnel work a 48/96 schedule: 48 hours on shift, then 96 hours off.

What inspired you to pursue a career in firefighting?

Chief Becerra: My sister became a firefighter after high school. This inspired me to follow in the same footprint. We currently hold the same rank in our respective agencies.

What do you enjoy most about being part of the Napa Valley community?

Chief Becerra: Community support. I feel that the community really supports our efforts here.

Can you share a memorable experience from your time with the department?

Chief Becerra: There have been many over the course of my 23-year career. One such memory was being on duty for the 2014 Napa Earthquake. This quake ended up being 6.0,
and it caused a significant amount of damage to our city. The emergency calls were
nonstop for approximately 12 hours. This tested our response system and
personnel.

What advice would you offer to someone considering a career in firefighting?

Chief Becerra: Do it! It is a great career, and it has been very rewarding for me. I have
had the opportunity to experience some awesome things during my time here. The
fire service provides one with the opportunity to be part of a great team and really
make a difference.
