Napa Man Arrested On Suspicion of Throwing a Soccer Ball at Someone's Head

Napa Police arrest multiple suspects over the weekend.


A 33-year-old Napa man was arrested over the weekend after police said he allegedly hit someone in the head with a soccer ball.

Manuel Alvarez Jr. was taken into custody at 7 p.m. Saturday at a residence in the 1400 block of Hemlock Street in  Napa. Police said he was booked at Napa Department of Corrections on suspicion of felony use of force, drug and drug paraphernalia possession, felony probation violation, being under the influence of a controlled substance and making threats with intent to terrorize.

Police said the incident began when officers were dispatched to an assault report at a residence in the 1400 block of Hemlock Street.

As an officer arrived on scene, he saw Manuel Alvarez walking on South Coombs Street without a shirt or shoes.

The officer contacted Alvarez and noticed that he displayed signs of being under the influence of drugs, police said.

Alvarez was evaluated and it was determined that he was allegedly impaired by drugs. Alvarez was arrested and eventually booked.

Another officer went to the residence on Hemlock and contacted the victim. The victim indicated that Alvarez was under the influence of drugs and threw a soccer ball at the victim’s head, police said.

Alvarez then challenged the victim to fight. The victim felt threatened, police said, because of the Alvarez’s size and impairment, so the victim grabbed a nearby wooden level for protection.

Alvarez then picked up a shovel and threatened the victim again. When the victim screamed for help, Alvarez fled the yard of the residence by jumping over the fence, police said.

Alvarez was found to be on probation with search and seizure terms. Officers searched Alvarez’s room and found a small amount of suspected methamphetamine and two glass smoking pipes used to smoke methamphetamine.

A 32-year-old Napa man and his 29-year-old spouse were arrested Sunday by Napa Police on suspicion of domestic violence.

Weston Warren Frey and Amy Frey were taken into custody at about 4 p.m. in a home in the 2500 block of Vintage Street in Napa.

The incident began when officers were dispatched to a report of an assault that occurred at a residence in the 2500 block of Vintage Street.

Officers arrived and contacted Amy Frey, who indicated that she and Weston Frey got into an argument.

Weston Frey became so angry he tried to shove Amy Frey out of the house, police said. As a result of Weston Frey’s effort to get the Amy Frey out of the house, she sustained a minor injury to her elbow, police said.

Weston Frey told officers that he and Amy Frey got into an argument. Weston said he was so upset about the argument that he wanted Amy out of the house, police said.

When Amy refused to leave, Weston grabbed her clothing from the bedroom and started to throw it into the front yard.

When he re-entered the house he was confronted by Amy, who pulled a knife from her pocket, police said. Weston then grabbed the knife, at which time Amy bit the back of his arm, causing minor injury.

Amy and Weston Frey were arrested and booked, police said.

A 37-year-old Napa man was arrested on suspicion of battery of a spouse and attempting to prevent a victim or witness from reporting to police.

Alberto Jesus Cirigo was taken into custoday at about 9 p.m. Sunday at a home in the 10 block of Fairview Drive in Napa.

The incident started when officers were dispatched to a residence in the 10 block of Fairview Drive for a report of a family disturbance.

 Officers arrived and contacted the victim, who stated she had got into an argument with Alberto Cirigo regarding how he should deal with their children, police said.

Cirigo told the victim to leave the residence and began to shove her out of the house.

When she refused, she grabbed the phone and attempted to call the police. Cirigo grabbed the phone from her and hung it up.

Cirigo then went into the bedroom and began to remove the victim’s clothes and throw them outside. At was at this time the police showed up.

Cirigo was arrested and booked.

A 48-year-old Napa-area transient who was riding a bicycle was arrested Friday evening on suspicion of drug transport and drug paraphernalia possession and probation violation.

Michael Adam Purkey was taken into custody at about 6:30 p.m.

Police said Purkey was contacted while riding his bicycle in the 2400 block of Rigdon Street. The officer knew Purkey had multiple probation orders, with terms of search and seizure, police said

 The officer searched Purkey and found three small baggies of suspected methamphetamine in his pockets as well as a pipe used for smoking methamphetamine.

Purkey was arrested and booked.

Two Napa men were arrested at about 8 p.m. Friday -- one on suspicion of giving false identification to police, and the other on suspicion of a probation violation.

Americo Michael Hernandez, 21, and Ivan Hernandez, 20, were taken into custody in the 10 block of DeWitt Avenue in Napa.

Officers went to a residence in the 10 block of DeWitt Avenue to conduct a probation search on a documented gang member, Americo Hernandez.

 As officers knocked on the door of this residence, Ivan Hernandez was stopped by an officer as he ran out of the back door.

When asked his name, Ivan gave a different name. An officer on scene knew Ivan, a documented gang member, from prior contacts and knew is has giving a false name to the officer, police said.

Ivan was arrested and booked for giving a false name to the officers. Americo was arrested and booked for violation of his probation by associating with known gang members.
