NAPA VALLEY, CA —Despite the sweltering heat, firefighters contained enough of the Pickett fire to allow authorities on Tuesday to lift evacuation orders.

While crews try to extinguish the last remnants of fire, Napa County lawmakers are seeking disaster relief from Gov. Gavin Newsom and the Trump Administration.

On Tuesday, the Calistoga City Council members will vote on whether to seek state and federal dollars by declaring an emergency.

Their vote follows a move by Napa County Supervisors to do the same.

Calling conditions an "extreme peril" to the safety of people and property in Napa County, Supervisors decided Aug. 26 to seek state and national disaster relief.

The county could then tap into grant assistance under the California Disaster Assistance Act and the State Private Nonprofit Organizations Assistance Program for eligible community members and businesses.

Supervisors will also request that Gov. Newsom seek funds from the Trump Administration, including federal aid for individual assistance and public assistance, as well as Small Business Administration funds.

Supervisors also declared a health emergency due to the hazardous waste and materials created by the Pickett fire.

Fire officials warned residents to continue to use caution on roads in the area. Fire equipment and crews will be active in the fire area and continue to patrol control lines.

Areas within the fire footprint remain restricted to emergency personnel.
