Sanitation Truck Overturns, Blocks Silverado Trail

A Napa County hazmat team responded. Two people who were trapped inside had to be hospitalized.

NAPA COUNTY, CA —Napa Valley's Silverado Trail was shut down Friday when a sanitation truck overturned, trapping two people inside and causing a hazardous materials situation.

Emergency personnel with CAL FIRE/Napa County Fire, Calistoga Fire, AMR and California Highway Patrol responded to the wreck reported at 5:21 a.m. south of Calistoga near the 4500 block of Silverado Trail.

Once firefighters freed both patients from the wreckage, one was flown by a Sonoma County Fire District air ambulance to a hospital for treatment of major injuries. The second patient suffered moderate injuries and was driven to a hospital in an ambulance.

The truck's sanitation tank did not rupture, according to Cal Fire.

Firefighters and the Napa Interagency Hazmat Team worked to contain around 30 gallons of diesel fuel, along with soap and water, that spilled into a ditch.

A creek was nearby, but Cal Fire said the spilled fuel did not enter any waterways.

Silverado Trail North was closed between Larkmead and Dunaweal lanes for nearly six hours. The roadway reopened around 11 a.m., the CHP said.

The California Office of Emergency Services, California Fish and Wildlife, the County of Napa, and California Environmental Health were notified of the incident.
