Seeded Players Take Lead in Pro Tennis Tourney in Napa Valley

Napa Valley Challenger, a USTA Pro Circuit event, continues this week at Napa Valley Country Club.

Seeded players managed to win their second round matches on Wednesday in the Napa Valley Challenger tennis tournament at Napa Valley Country Club.

In singles play the number 5 seed, former Stanford player, Bradley Klahn won over 17 year old Thanasi Kokkinakis 36 63 63. Tim Smyczek, number 2 seed and wild card won over Daniel Cox 61 61.

On Wednesday, the Napa Valley Challenger also featured the women's pro am which is where, amateurs were matched with pros. Napa local, Marie Torkelson took home the title with the most games won.

The Napa Valley Challenger would like to thank the other local contestants: Amy Rogers, St. Helena; Laurence Schlatter, St. Helena; and Tonya Fuller, Napa.

In the men's doubles we had a lot of heavily contested matches resulting in third set match tie breaks with the number 2 seeds Tennys Sandgren/Rhyne Williams falling to Thanasi Kokkinakis/Benjamin Mitchell 46, 62, 10-7. Denis Kudla/Daniel Young won their third set match against Edward Corrie/Daniel Smethhurst 62 62.

When asked about his game today Kudla said, "It was good, just doubles today but I am really happy with our performance - two good matches together this week and really looking forward to the next one."

Speaking to how the Napa Valley has affected his game, " It's been great, this is really a one of a kind tournament, to play in the scenery you have here is really quite special, looking forward to coming back here year after year."

Young had positive things to say about the tournament, "This is one of the best run challengers I've seen and I've played a lot. It's been great, Tournament Director Chris Arns and his wife, Allison have been awesome. Everyone's been great and it's well run tournament."
