Southwest Airlines: Check JWA For Flight Delay Information

Southwest passengers from John Wayne Airports were delayed through Monday after the airline cancels hundreds of flights across the country.

SANTA ANA, CA —Are you flying Southwest Airlines into or out of John Wayne Airport Monday? Be sure and check your flight status before you head to the airport. Southwest Airlines reportedly canceled hundreds of flights over the weekend due to a variety of issues, the airline says.

In an emailed statement reported by the L.A. Times, Southwest Airlines said it had experienced weather challenges in its Florida airports at the beginning of the weekend and had unexpected air traffic control issues in the same region. Those challenges led to delays and cancellations for Southwest Airlines beginning Friday.

On Monday, residual fallout from the barrage of cancellations has affected Orange County's John Wayne Airport, with departures reading "delayed" across the board.

Though a handful of flights arrived and departed on time Monday, many were delayed across the board, according to the John Wayne Airport website.

Arriving flights from Chicago, Houston, Phoenix, Denver, and Las Vegas were delayed by only 15 minutes, according to OCAir.com. Multiple departing flights—such as to San Jose Del Cabo, Phoenix, Nashville, San Jose, Oakland, Denver and Dallas —were delayed by as much as an hour.

Southwest Airlines said it is directing customers to use self-service rebooking options on Southwest.com, where updates on the status of their travel plans are available.

"There were four Southwest flight cancelations out of John Wayne Airport Monday morning," Anasophia Cervin, spokesperson for the airport told Patch.

Southwest Airlines anticipated 13 delays from 46 flights Monday, though the full impact would not be assessed until later in the evening,

Travelers were asked to check directly with the airline for updates and information on potential weather delays.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Southwest Airlines canceled more than 1,000 flights, or 28% of its scheduled flights, as of 2 p.m. Sunday, according to flight tracker FlightAware.

By comparison, Allegiant Airlines canceled 5% of its flights over the same time period, and Spirit airlines canceled 4% of its flights.

American Airlines canceled 2% of its flights, according to the tracker.

There were 367 Southwest Airlines flights canceled as of 8:15 a.m

Monday, according to FlightAware.com. There were at least 1,800 Southwest Airlines flights canceled nationwide over the weekend -- and more than 1,000 flights canceled on Sunday, according to Fox 11.
