NEWPORT BEACH, CA — Children across the city will go on vacation this month when school lets out for the summer, and the Newport Beach Public Library wants to play a role in their plans during the break.

The Newport Beach Public Library will launch its Summer Reading Program on June 11, and it will be open to children of all ages. The program will run through July 30, and this year's theme is "Reading Beyond the Beaten Path," library officials said.

Sign-ups for the program will be available on the Newport Beach Public Library website starting June 11. Book recommendations and prizes for participating will also be listed online.

The program will prevent youths from succumbing to the "summer slide," where they suffer a loss of their academic skills during the break, library officials said. It's also a chance for high school students to get a jump start on any required reading for the new academic year.

Newport Beach officials said that the Summer Reading Program is also open to adults and "provides an ideal reason to catch up" on any books they've been meaning to read.
