Chatsworth Raises Banners High as School Opens
Some high schools are beginning the academic year today. Other schools open Sept. 7, the start of the traditional school year.
When the bells ring at 7:45 a.m. Monday and the homeroom doors fly open, the first day of the new school year will begin at Chatsworth High.
Students will be welcomed by a parade of new banners on De Soto Avenue light posts touting an array of academic academies to challenge them.
And also new this year is the requirement that students be innoculated against whooping cough. School authorities will be checking.

If it seems a bit odd that school is beginning in mid-August, you're right. A handful of LAUSD high schools are beginning the term early.

Canoga Park, Cleveland, Daniel Pearl Journalism and Communications Magnet, El Camino, Jefferson, Kennedy, Lincoln, LEMA at Lincoln, Maywood Academy, Monroe, Northridge Academy, Reseda, Sylmar, Taft, Van Nuys and Verdugo.
And, according to the LAUSD, a single elementary school, Jaime Escalante.
