CSUN Orders All Fraternities and Sororities to Cease Pledging Activies

All fraternities and sororities at Cal State Northridge were under orders today to cease all pledging activities, and a fraternity was placed on interim suspension while it is being investigated for a hazing incident.

William Watkins, vice president of student affairs, told fraternity and sorority presidents in a letter sent Thursday evening to “cease and desist” in their pledging activities, the school’s student newspaper, The Sundial, reported.

“The university does not object to the induction of pledges, but they shall not be made subject to further pledge activity,” he wrote.

He added that Pi Kappa Alpha has been placed on interim suspension pending a CSUN investigation into a hazing incident, The Sundial reported. The incident wasn’t detailed, but Watkins said the fraternity also has been suspended by its national headquarters.

The suspension comes months after 19-year-old CSUN student Armando Villa died during a hazing incident -- a hike -- while he pledged to a different fraternity, Pi Kappa Phi. The fraternity later voted to shut down the CSUN chapter.
