Man Armed With Machete Shot, Killed By Police In San Fernando Valley

Police today are investigating the fatal shooting of a machete-wielding man who was shot during a confrontation with police in the Valley.

SAN FERNANDO VALLEY -- Police today are continuing their investigation of the fatal shooting of a machete-wielding man who was shot during a confrontation with Los Angeles Police Department officers in Calabasas.

Police were called at 7:40 p.m. Wednesday to 23400 block of West Calabasas Road and Mulholland Drive regarding an assault with a deadly weapon, LAPD Officer Norma Eisenman told City News Service.

Upon their arrival, officers located a man who had been armed with a machete and attacked someone in the parking lot of a McDonald's. The suspect then ran away from them into the nearby Sagebrush Cantina restaurant and during a confrontation, the officers opened fire on the suspect outside of the restaurant, striking him, Eisenman said.

The suspect, who the LAPD said was in his mid-50s, was taken to a hospital, where he later died, ABC7 reported. It was not immediately clear what led up to the shooting.

Police recovered the machete and a knife at the scene, and Eisenman said no officers were injured.
