UPDATE: Police Kill Teen Robbery Suspect at Topanga and Roscoe

LAPD chased 17-yer-old suspect fleeing holdup at a gas station.

Los Angeles police shot a 17-year-old robbery suspect to death early Tuesday in nearby Canoga Park, a police watch commander said.

The teen was identifed as Carlos Javier Heredia of Los Angeles.

A Chatsworth Patch reporter in the vicinity said that shortly after midnight she heard "what sounded like a whole bunch of firecrackers going off... but not quite. Then nothing, then another round. Then a third. Then a bunch of sirens, and [in about a] minute ... a helicopter."

The shooting occurred at Roscoe and Topanga Canyon boulevards, Lt. Burt Gutierrez of the LAPD's Topanga Station said.

Heredia reportedly died immediately.

At the scene, LAPD Lt. Rick Banks said that there was an attempted robbery at a Chevron gas station and police responded to a 911 call.

Arriving officers spotted the suspect. There was a foot chase and the suspect allegedly displayed a handgun and was shot by an officer, Banks said. The suspect did not fire at police, Bruce Borihahn of LAPD Media Relations said. The officer was not identified.

A handgun was recovered at the scene, Borihahn said.

Westbound Roscoe was closed between Topanga Canyon Boulevard and Fallbrook Avenue for a time, Borihahn said. Eastbound Roscoe was open as the investgation continued.
