Brush Fire Extinguished At Encampment In Marin County

Police said they arrested the person associated with the encampment.

NOVATO, CA — Firefighters put out a small blaze that started at an encampment Thursday in Novato.

At around 3 a.m. on Thursday, Novato Police Department officers said they responded to a fire behind the Novato Skatepark.

Officers said they found an encampment engulfed in flames, which had spread to a nearby brush but was quickly contained and extinguished by the Novato Fire Protection District.

The person associated with the encampment, Jamee Newkirk, 60, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

No one was injured.

Police said they arrested Newkirk for the felony charge of recklessly causing a fire on forest land and booked her into the Marin County Jail.
