San Rafael, California - July 7, 2023 - Thelen Creative of Novato is pleased to announce the release of a short, heavily researched documentary film that delves into the brief but rich history of the former Pepperland Ballroom, an iconic music venue nestled in the heart of San Rafael, California. Titled "Pepperland: Woodstock West," this exclusive production chronicles the legendary history of a former construction Quonset turned Beatles-inspired rock ballroom in the post-Summer of Love San Francisco Bay Area music scene. The short doc release comes in advance of the upcoming Thelen Creative penned feature article, "Pepperland: Woodstock West."

Produced by audio/visual collective Thelen Creative of Novato," Pepperland: Woodstock West" chronicles the rise of Pepperland Ballroom from its humble beginnings as a construction Quonset in the 1940s to its brief status as a mecca for counterculture and musical performances during the cultural transition following the Summer of Love. The short 12min. doc chronicles the story based on interviews with renowned artists, local musicians, employees, promoters, owners, and passionate patrons who witnessed firsthand the magic that unfolded within Pepperland's doors.

Over two dozen artists and musicians who played at Woodstock in late 1969 also played Pepperland, earning the venue the Woodstock West moniker. From groundbreaking performances by legendary artists Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, and Sly and the Family Stone to lesser-known but equally influential local bands, the documentary succinctly captures the nostalgic essence of a unique moment in time in Bay Area music history.

"We wanted to chronicle the story of Pepperland Ballroom and showcase its significance in music history," said prod. Geo Thelen. "This documentary is a tribute to the artists who graced its stage and the vibrant community surrounding them. We hope that 'Pepperland: Woodstock West' will reignite the memories of those there and introduce a new generation to this pivotal moment in the Bay Area's musical evolution."

The documentary is available for streaming on various digital platforms, including YouTube via the ThelenCreative channel. The former Pepperland building still stands today along Highway 101 at 721 E. Francisco Blvd. near the iconic Litchfield's sign in San Rafael.
