📰 Here are the top stories in Orange County today:
- The Orange County Sheriff's Department is making arrests in the weekend assault on off-duty Marines at the San Clemente Pier. Officials arrested nine teenagers on Tuesday. Five teen suspects – four boys and a girl – are now cooling their heels in OC’s Juvenile Hall “for assault with a deadly weapon (non-firearm).” An additional four teens will also face charges but won’t be arrested. Reportedly, one teen attacked a Marine from behind, causing the latter to take exception. Mob mentality set in, and crowd members began “punching and kicking them, using racial slurs and expletives.” Mayor Chris Duncan said, “The barbaric assault on off-duty Marines at the San Clemente Pier goes against everything we stand for in San Clemente.” (Patch, USA Today)
- The last day of Anaheim’s Splash Mountain log ride didn’t go off without a hitch. A guest suffered a panic attack while on the ride and jumped out. Reportedly, the rider is okay and nobody got hurt. (Patch)
- The buzz of leaf blowers will continue in Orange — for now. Several questions popped up at the May 23 city council meeting that made it impossible for councilmembers to reach a consensus. Councilman Jon Dumitru went so far as to allege that the act of regulating noise levels of gardening equipment would “penalize low-income landscapers for trying to make a living.” On the other side, Councilman John Gyllenhammer noted that tweaking existing laws would make them enforceable. There’s a possibility that this issue will be taken up again in the future. (Voice of OC)
- Aaron Lim, an 8th-grade student at El Rancho Charter School in Anaheim Hills, is the only Orange County contestant in the National Spelling Bee. He’s moved on to the next round by correctly spelling “cephalopod” and identifying “seraphic” to mean “sublime.” "My goal is to do the absolute best I can, but most of all, have fun, make friends and experience all I can at Bee Week," he told interviewers. It’s interesting to note that no Orange County participant ever won the Bee. (Audacy)
- If you’re planning on a staycation this summer, the OC isn’t the place to be. Insiders compared 182 cities for things like the cost of eating out and the number of pools per capita. At the top of the list is Honolulu, Hawaii. At the bottom is Chula Vista, California. Orange County doesn’t enter the list until No. 113 with Garden Grove. It is followed by Huntington Beach in No. 115, Irvine in 163rd place, and Anaheim as No. 166. Santa Ana came in as No. 178. By the way, Anaheim rated last when it comes to swimming pools per capita.
