📰 Here are the top stories today in Orange County:

  1. A suspected burglar and vandal was shot and killed in Midway City. Reportedly armed with a rusty hatchet, Sheriff’s Deputies encountered the suspect on Wednesday around 5 a.m. in the 14000 block of Van Buren Street. They shot him. (Patch, The Orange County Register/paywall)
  2. The FBI raided an Irvine apartment complex on Wednesday. They arrested two men in their early 20s — one a Marine — in connection with a 2022 firebombing of a Costa Mesa clinic. It is noteworthy that one of the men arrested “texted an acquaintance and took credit for the fire the day after.” (ABC)
  3. The Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District now enlists drones to control mosquito populations. Officials explain that you won’t see them in your backyard; the drones are more for open areas like the Bolsa Chica Wetlands. Drones are armed with “species-specific bacterial chemicals that we use to control mosquito larvae.” (KTLA)
  4. Huntington Beach neighbors around Edison High School were targeted with “anti-LGBTQ+ and antisemitic flyers.” They might have come in response to an Edison teacher’s presentation of a “student-created clip about Pride Month.” However, Huntington Beach had previously already been targeted with flyers apparently from the KKK. “The actions of a repugnant few continue to define Huntington Beach as a place that is unwelcome to diversity, inclusion, and tolerance,” State Sen. Dave Min said. (Voice of OC)
  5. Poche Beach, at the border of San Clemente and Dana Point, is on Heal the Bay's "Beach Bummer" list as one of the state’s most polluted beaches. It’s been on the list four times in the last 11 years. Reportedly, pollutants come from a “storm channel that collects runoff and discharges directly into the surf zone along the county-owned beach.” (Patch)

  • "Anyone who has driven by Avenida Pico and El Camino Real in San Clemente has probably noticed and appreciated the historic Miramar Theater — or, better, experienced a show at this iconic location back in its glory days. Recently, Truck 56 lent a helping hand to remove a dilapidated flag from the historical building that is currently closed. Feeling a sense of duty and community, the crew then bought a new flag and hardware to mount it." (Orange County Fire Authority via Facebook)
