📰 Here are the top stories today in Orange County:

  1. Smile! You might be on the new surveillance video cameras Buena Park intends to install “along Beach Boulevard and city parks” — particularly Boisseranc, George Bellis, and William Peak parks. The City Council approved $300,000, which gives some neighbors an increased feeling of security. Critics say that adding cameras leads to surveillance of residents. Officials explain that the cameras “will aid in both solving and deterring crimes.” (Voice of OC)
  2. Beginning in the summer, San Clemente will receive sand offshore from Oceanside. A pit area selected is “one mile out in the ocean west of the Oceanside Harbor and Camp Pendleton’s Del Mar Boat Basin.” The sand transfer involves 250,000 cubic yards every six years for about 50 years. It’s important to note that ocean currents move sand north to south, which means that Oceanside will get a good bit of its sand back. (The San Diego Union-Tribune/paywall)
  3. California State University, Fullerton is looking to pivot its campus model from commuter to residential. However, these improvements will likely not affect you immediately. The campus is making long-term plans that should be completed in 2039. At that time, the administration wants to see “more residential amenities, academic spaces, transportation options, and student life.” Besides student housing, the plan calls for an event center and faculty housing. The school will spend more than $600 million, with student housing projected to cost $506.46 million and faculty housing $112.13 million. (Daily Titan)
  4. Yorba Linda’s Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream opens on May 11! At 11 a.m. sharp, the business throws open its doors. The first 100 guests get free ice cream for a year. They’ll have a prize wheel; besides that, a DJ will keep the mood going with tunes between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Head on down to 18210 Yorba Linda Blvd.! (Handel’s)
  5. The Postal Service will collect non-perishable food donations again as part of its annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive this Saturday. Simply leave your donations bagged up at the mailbox. "All collections stay in the local community." (Patch)
