500 Cupcake Giveaway Celebrates Marilyn Monroe's Birthday

PALM SPRINGS, CA — PS Resorts invites Marilyn Monroe fans Wednesday for her birthday celebration at the Forever Marilyn sculpture in downtown Palm Springs where 500 red velvet cupcakes will be distributed.

"We are excited to welcome everyone out to enjoy this fun and festive evening in Palm Springs," said chairman of PS Resorts Aftab Dada.

Dada said that attendees will have the unique opportunity to take a photo with the Forever Marilyn sculpture under a pink spotlight as the sun sinks into the west.

Forever Marilyn will glow in the pink spotlight for June 1 only -- what would have been her 96th birthday, according to organizers.

The birthday celebration evening will begin at 6:15 p.m. as the Palm Springs Mounted Police Search and Rescue Team hands out the velvet cupcakes with pink frosting -- donated by Sherman's Deli in Palm Springs -- to 500 attendees.

At 7 p.m. an ongoing concert series of tribute band performances in downtown Palm Springs will feature Mirage -- a Fleetwood Mac tribute band -- who will lead attendees with a singing of Happy Birthday for Monroe.

The series of free monthly tribute band concerts began in February -- hosted by the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce -- and will go through July 6 with a performance from Brad Ford & Fortune Son in tribute to Creedence Clearwater Revival.

"Our city now has the perfect outdoor venue in which to host a concert series like this," said the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce chief executive officer, Nona Watson. "Our goal is to bring visitors and residents from throughout the Coachella Valley to downtown Palm Springs."

Watson added that she hopes the concerts will boost business for local bars, restaurants, retail businesses and hotels in the surrounding area.

The 26-foot-tall Forever Marilyn Statue was created with stainless steel and aluminum by sculptor Seward Johnson in 2011.
