College of the Desert To Save $300,000 By Cutting Classes
The school plans to cut 100 classes for the 2012-13 school year, according to a college official.

The in Palm Desert hopes to make $300,000 in savings by cutting up to 100 classes this the upcoming school year.
The move is in response to state budget cuts on education and some of the classes could return depending on the fate of a tax initiative being touted by Gov. Jerry Brown, according to Farley Herzek, vice president of academic affairs.
COD could lose $1.8 million for the 2012-13 school year if the tax initiative does not pass, Herzek said.

"I can’t tell people how to vote, but we can certainly let people know how they vote will impact the quality of life here in the Coachella Valley. There is a big connection between how folks vote and what types of services we can provide the citizens here," he said.
The school hopes to put the places back into the schedule by this spring.

He added that no one was happy about making this decision.
"For the students, it’s just shameful that they are a few classes away from completeion and we have to hold them back. Students who are eager to get started, we don’t have seats for them," Herzek said.
