Council To Consider Next Step In Upscale Hotel Project

The Palm Desert City Council will consider a resolution that would vacate a frontage road along Highway 74, but would allow the city to retain ownership if the project is never built.

The next step in the construction of an upscale hotel off El Paseo in Palm Desert will go before the Palm Desert City Council Thursday.

The council is scheduled to vote during its regular 4 p.m. Thursday meeting on whether to vacate a frontage road off Highway 74 to make room for landscaping at the proposed hotel, according to a city staff report.

Council members approved the -- located west of Ocotillo Drive and south of El Paseo -- in August.

The process to vacate a road is separate from the previous approval process, requiring a public hearing and a recommendation from the Planning Commission. The commission recommended moving forward with the plan at its Feb. 20 meeting.

No letters in opposition to or in favor of vacating the frontage road -- which does not connect to a public street or neighborhood -- have been received by the city, according to Tony Bagato, the city's principal planner.

The vacating of the road will not go into effect until the project is completed, the report states.
