Transgender, Non-Binary Youth ​Celebrated During PS Reading Day

A "National Day of Reading: A Celebration of Stories Supporting Transgender and Non-Binary Youth" will take place Saturday.

PALM SPRINGS, CA — The city of Palm Springs Human Rights Commission and the Palm Springs Public Library this weekend will host a "National Day of Reading: A Celebration of Stories Supporting Transgender and Non-Binary Youth."

The event will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Palm Springs Public Library Youth Room, 300 S. Sunrise Way.

Mayor Grace Garner, Library Director Jeannie Kays and Human Rights Commissioner David A. Vignolo will be among those reading from children’s books recommended by the Welcoming Schools program — a bias-based bullying prevention initiative of the Human Rights Campaign Foundation.

Those books include, “My Rainbow,” “Red: A Crayon’s Story,” and “Petra & Pearl.”

The goal of the "Welcoming Schools’ National Day of Reading" is to inspire caring community members to advocate for the human rights of transgender and non-binary youth; to foster a climate that instills positive change and provides the necessary support for these students, according to a news release from the city.
