PETALUMA, CA — A Petaluma man accused of fleeing from a court hearing last week was taken into custody Friday after leading police personnel on a brief foot chase, a sergeant said.

Dustin Breeden, 41, had a warrant out for his arrest for felony domestic violence and dissuading a witness, and had been under surveillance for several days when he emerged from his residence shortly before 3 p.m. Friday.

Detectives started to coordinate patrol officers to the area — Payran and Madison streets — in an attempt to safely take Breeden into custody, Petaluma police Sgt. Paul Gilman said.

As patrol officers responded, Breeden fled toward Madison. Detectives and patrol officers were chasing Breeden on foot when he tried to jump a fence at the back of a residence in the 700 block of Madison, Gilman said. Police personnel converged and forcibly removed Breeden from the fence and took him into custody.

Breeden was detained in handcuffs and a loaded 9mm handgun was removed from his waistband, according to police.

His arrest prompted a search of his person which led officers to discover 10 grams of fentanyl on him, Gilman said.

Breeden was taken to Petaluma Valley Hospital for medical clearance, then was taken to Sonoma County jail. He was booked on the warrant and on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a handgun, possession with intent to distribute narcotics (fentanyl), and resisting/obstructing arrest by law enforcement.

Breeden was being held without bail as of Tuesday, jail records showed.
