How 'Bout Those A's?

If your voice is hoarse this morning from screaming "Let's go Oakland," and you're thinking that's a perfectly good reason to skip work and head to the coliseum for today's deciding game for the AL West Title, share your joy right now on Patch.

While naysayers might diss on fans for not showing up in droves (A's attendance has historically been embarrassingly low) today's game is a sell-out, according to the Athletics. So, if you're jumping on the bandwagon now, it might be tough to get tickets. (StubHub is a possibility IF the A's lose today and play a wildcard game Friday.)

Our family took the kids Saturday and Tuesday night, and we haven't seen that sort of energy there since 2000. The room felt packed, fans were on their feet for every key pitch and play and there was nary a Texas fan in sight.

It's safe to say, in the crushing throngs afterward, my kids and I have never high-fived more complete strangers. And it felt completely right.

As we drove out, the green-and-gold spirit followed, with car horns blaring the familiar crowd starter "honk, honk — honk honk honk" through the streets of Oakland.

I'm not a sports writer so I won't pretend to tell you why or how this particular band of players accomplished so much this season, but I can tell you that watching their young energy, from doing funky dances in the dugout to pie-ing their manager in the face, is a total blast that brings back memories of back-in-the-day teams.
