"The Dream": The Writers' Spotlight
Fourth grader Andrew Saleh shares a short story of dreams coming true.

The Dream
A story of dreams coming true.
By: Andrew Saleh
Andre’s brother loved horror movies. He used every second of his free time watching them. But Andre hated them, and to rub salt in the wound, he has a photographic memory, so every little bit he overhears is permanently etched into his brain. Giving him nightmares. Which are also seared into his memory. Giving him more nightmares. For Andre, this endless cycle is the worst thing since sliced bread, (he’s afraid of knives). But one night, he had a particularly scary dream.
He was walking down a hallway in his house, when he heard a sound. CLICK! He’s terrified of clicking sounds. He turned around and saw this strange darkness eating up the hallway like a snake eating a mouse. Naturally, Andre started into a dead sprint. But the hallway seemed to just get longer. Suddenly, he froze in place. He couldn’t move a muscle. He was scared of mussels. The darkness was getting closer. When it reached him, the entire corridor went black, and he started falling into a bottomless void.
That’s when he woke up, showered in a cold sweat. He kept having this ghastly nightmare every time he closed his eyes. Literally. Until two weeks later.
One day, Andre was walking down the hallway, when he heard that unmistakable click. He turned around, and saw the darkness. But something was different. A strange foggy black as night silhouette flew out of it. Andre started running as fast as a cheetah, the hallway lengthening with every step. Then it happened. He froze, and the entire hallway went black, and he fell. The last thing he saw was the black figure giggling, then flying away.
Back on the surface, all life went on as usual. It was as if he had never existed in the first place.
