PLEASANTON, CA — Warmer weather making you think of summer? It's just around the corner and your calendar will fill up quickly!

Pleasanton's Summer Reading program is back for regular in-person activities. This year there will be all types of events from pop-up camps to special performances.

"This year's summer reading program provides endless opportunities for creativity, connection, and life-long learning," library programs coordinator Cherie Buenaflor said. "Whether it's learning how to draw comics, making special camp-related crafts, or simply reading a book about the great outdoors, we're happy to encourage reading beyond the beaten path at the library this summer."

The City of Pleasanton Library and Recreation Department will kick off its free Summer Reading Program June 4 just as summer vacation starts for students. It runs through August 7.

Community members of all ages will be encouraged to join the Pleasanton Library and Recreation
Department in its mission to “Start your journey here: Discover, connect, enjoy," the city said.

"In its Strategic Plan, Pleasanton Library and Recreation is committed to identifying and enhancing programming to encourage exploration, intellectual curiosity, and life-long literacy," the city said. "While children are earning rewards and virtual badges by tracking their reading throughout the summer using the fun-to-use Beanstack website and app, they’re not the only ones who can get in on the fun. Teens and adults can also log their reading hours in a chance to win prizes."

A new feature for 2022 allows readers to vote for a new library card design and earn an extra raffle ticket.

On June 4, the library will host a kickoff event, where the first 100 participants to sign up for
summer reading will get a prize. Family entertainer Brian Scott will perform his
"Biblio Spectacular” magic show, the city said.

Here are some of the other performances for the summer per the city:

  • For children and families, The Firehouse’s Creatures of Impulse will present “Made to Order Fairy Tale” and the Pleasanton Youth Drama Camps will present a special showcase of original works, as well as a preview of Stinky Cheese Man the Musical.
  • For teens, Camp NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) will challenge young novelists to finish writing a novel in one month, starting with a pre-writing workshop on June 25 and ending with a visit by award-winning author Maggie Tokuda Hall.
  • Also for teens, comic book artist Oliver Chin will teach participants about the art of making comics and city staff will share some scary, and not-so-scary campfire stories at the Alviso Adobe Community Park.
  • Adults are invited to listen to the folk stylings of High School Music Collaborative alumni Lauryn Marie at the Firehouse Arts Center.
  • Participants of all ages are invited to visit Middle Earth for the Peripatetic Players in their special two-part “Lord of the Rings” parody show.

“We are so excited for our annual summer reading program this year! Librarian Katie DeLang said. “We know how much our community has wanted opportunities to gather in person and we are looking forward to hosting a variety of weekly programs in the Pleasanton Library and around the city."
