"Here Comes Autumn": The Writers' Spotlight
Pleasanton Teen Poet Laureate, Ishmeet Dhillon, writes a poem about fall. Enjoy!

Here Comes Autumn
The embrace of
Golden colors,
And waning warmth.
The crackling under feet,
And falling leaves of all sorts,
Fills cool and crisp air,
With the presence of
A being,
Her stride unwavering.
Low sounds,
Emerge from the heat of yesterday.
The rumble of the clouds,
Perhaps the whistles of newfound wind,
Faintly in the distance.

And summer,
Whose unfiltered sunlight
Beamed for months
Unbothered.
Is soon to be cast into
The shadow
Of her glory,
Of her beauty,
Of the enigmatic Autumn.
For she brings mysterious darkness,
To days once long and broad.
And sets ablaze to trees of emerald,
To make them a part of her facade.

Here she comes,
Tucking flora and fauna into bed.
To get them ready for
The wrath of winter,
She plants a kiss on their head.
For she shakes the trees well,
Leaving them bare.
And then we step on
Those snips of broken leaves,
Under our feet,
On sunset walks that we share.
Here comes Autumn
With fields ready to be picked,
As the harvest moon
Settles into her inviting abode.
Exciting young kids,
Who drag their parents,
To the patch to pick
A pumpkin.
Or two.
Or three, or maybe even four.
And then those pumpkins,
Picked with haste,
Are cut up
Sloppily.
Smooth and orange
Surfaces,
Change to raggedly drawn
eyes and mouths.
They adorn porches,
And attend festive nights.
Until they too wither away
Once Autumn’s song starts to
Bring more chills.
And the gentle smell,
Of cinnamon cookies,
And pumpkin spice,
The color orange
The color yellow,
And clouds settling up above at night.
For she brings these darker nights,
For sleep to be changed,
For moods to be altered.
For she shows us,
That whatever we see,
Like the landscapes set ablaze,
Can ever so effortlessly change.
Ever so beautifully transform.
Like the mysterious,
And the silent whisper,
Of Autumn herself.
And the hum of her rhythm,
No longer a distant melody,
The beat of her song,
Is now heard more clearly.
I can hear her,
I can see her,
I feel her.
Here she comes.
Here comes Autumn.
