The WUE covers students from WA, OR, CA, AZ, NV, UT, ID, MT, NM, CO, WY, ND, SD, AK, and HI.

Not all schools in these states participate. For example, ASU, University of Arizona, Boulder, Washington, and University of Oregon do not participate. (However, ASU, University of Arizona, and Boulder are known to give good scholarships to above-average students.)

So, what is the WUE? Instead of paying 3-4x in-state tuition just for being out-of-state, you get a 50% discount off of the out-of-state tuition. So, if the in-state tuition is 10k per year and out-of-state is 30k, the WUE payment would be 15k a year. A great deal.

Some colleges, like Boise State, have greatly increased their requirements to qualify in the last several years. Additionally, other colleges have their own scholarships that are still pretty good if you do not qualify for the WUE. UNR and WSU would be good examples. Lastly, others (like NM colleges) have in-state scholarships that are even better than the WUE.

Finally, not all majors qualify for the WUE. Nursing is one of the most common majors that does not qualify for the WUE at many colleges.
