"Left Hand": The Writers' Spotlight
Eighth grader, Sameeha Soora, shares a mesmerizing poem about friendship to celebrate National Poetry Month!

Left Hand
Sameeha Soora
our friendship started
with a handshake
but the handshake
was with our left hands
not a big deal you say,
but someone once told me
“never shake hands with someone
using your left hand.
you will be building a castle
on a foundation made of sand.”
but in spite of those words,
i shook her hand with my left.
her smile pulled me in.
little did i know,
that smile forced me
to follow her
wherever she went.
she went up dark alleys,
Burned buildings
Took hearts and pierced them,
Until every bit of life
Was drained.
She broke windows
made of glass.
And with that broken glass
She cut my left hand.
Drawing a scar that said,
“You shouldn’t have shaken
My left hand.”
I ran after her,
Begging her to stop
But again, she smiled.
no trace of malice
in her eyes.
And those same eyes
Are burned into my mind.
And instead of a smile
I see a sneer.
And now
all i remember of her
is her left hand
grabbing a sword
and stabbing me in the back.
because she climbed
that crooked castle
built on sand.
she planted a flag
on the top.
and i stood with her
as she slowly
crushed the castle
with her left hand.
