PLEASANTON, CA — John Madden, the Hall of Fame football coach turned legendary broadcaster, died Tuesday morning at the age of 85. He coached the Oakland Raiders until taking up a career as a sports broadcaster.

Madden was known for combining brash calls with simple explanations, cementing him as one of the leading narrators of NFL games for the past three decades. The Bay Area native was known for his giant personality, and for giving out the big candy bars on Halloween.

Madden's passing was unexpected, and the cause of his death has not been released.
