"Mom": The Writers' Spotlight
Livermore student, Anthony D'Onofrio, shares a beautiful metaphorical poem about his mother.

Mom
When I come home after a bad day I can always look to my mom to cheer me up. She has a superpower that won’t let me stay sad. She is like the light at the end of a long dark tunnel that seems to be stretching and elongating as you go. Just when you think it will never end a speckle of white appears. As it gets bigger, your spirits rise and the sorrow you felt is lifted, like taking off an uncomfortable and heavy sweater after a long day. This is how my mom’s superpower works. A blanket of her warm love to cover me after a day out in the cold. Whether it is just sitting down and comforting me or making me a hot meal or something else, her superpower never never fails.
My mom's eyes are soft yet hard. Cold yet warm. Sometimes they are like a hawk watching your every move while you try to escape. Other times they are inviting as if to say come closer, it's okay. When she gets mad you can see a storm brewing in her eyes like lightning preparing to strike. But it never takes long for the storm to pass and the sun to peek back out from behind the clouds, the light returning to her eyes. Her eyes are trees at the beginning of fall, mostly green with a bit of brown and dark orange. Over the years fall has progressed and her eyes are more brown but the tree is still very green.
