Pleasanton 7-Year-Old Chess Prodigy Aims To Become World's Youngest Grandmaster
California State Champion Varun Karthik Turaga is ranked second nationally at chess for his age group, but wants to go global.
PLEASANTON, CA — Pleasanton resident Varun Karthik Turaga first learned chess when he was three as a way to pass time during the pandemic, and he’s made incredible progress in the four years since.
As of September, Varun is ranked second nationally in chess for anyone under the age of eight, according to the U.S. Chess Federation. He’s also participated in roughly 50 tournaments, and is a two-time California State Champion. Now, he wants to become the best in the world: the youngest grandmaster ever.
Varun qualified for the International Chess Federation’s World Youth Chess Championship, which will take place in June to July 2026 at various locations in Eastern Europe.
