PLEASANTON, CA — Students at Foothill High School had a demonstration Friday morning to raise awareness about sexual harassment, a student told Patch.

Students were nine minutes late to their first class to advocate for Title IX compliance, Ella Piergrossi said. Piergrossi is a senior at the school.

“I am one of many students at Foothill who have decided to join a movement dedicated to spreading awareness about and eventually stopping sexual harassment on campus,” Piergrossi said.

Title IX is a federal law that prohibits sex-based discrimination and harassment in any school or educational program. It also protects transgender students and students who don’t identify with a gender stereotype.

Students held signs in front of the school until 8:39 a.m.

Piergrossi and fellow students rallied support in part to demand answers regarding posts on social media they say qualify as sexual harassment. The posts include lists for rating female students on their physicality, Piergrossi said.

The school sent out a message in response this week. The students say it wasn't enough.

Patch has reached out to the school district for comment.

More students were expected to stage a walkout at lunch in response to the school shooting in Uvalde, Texas Tuesday. That got moved to May 31.
