Spare the Air Alert Issued for Pleasanton, East Bay

Unhealthy air conditions forecasted because of hot, still weather combining with vehicle exhaust have prompted the Bay Area Air Quality Management District to issue a Spare the Air alert for Wednesday.

The alert notifying residents of unhealthy ozone levels is the region's sixth of the summer season, according to the air district.

"As we move into the warmer part of summer, it's vital that Bay Area residents find alternatives to driving alone to reduce smog," air district executive officer Jack Broadbent said in a statement.

Ozone, otherwise known as smog, can cause throat irritation, congestion, chest pain and other medical problems. Air district officials advise people on Spare the Air days to limit outdoor exercise to the early
morning hours when ozone levels are lower.

Residents can visit www.stacommutetips.org to find a list of commute programs and incentives available in the Bay Area.
