Sunflower Hill Offers New Programs for Individuals with Disabilities

A new series of cooking, social, and vocational activities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD)

Sunflower Hill, a Pleasanton-based nonprofit organization serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) has announced a new series of cooking, social, and vocational activities at the organization’s flagship community at Irby Ranch in Pleasanton.

The new classes, launched this month, include expanded in-person cooking options, virtual cooking segments featuring fun 'five-ingredient' recipes from Trader Joe's, as well as 'Learning with Olivia' - a new series of vocational classes designed to build confidence in common life skills. Also back is Popcorn Chat, the popular virtual program Sunflower Hill introduced during the pandemic to stay in touch.

“We're very excited to bring these new programs to our greater community," said Olivia Christensen, Sunflower Hill's Program Manager. "We've heard from so many folks who've asked us to expand our programming. We know the need is great, but it was important for us to identify the right programs for both our residents and program participants. We also wanted to complement many of the activities offered by other local I/DD program providers like the City of Pleasanton's RADD program and Special Olympics.”

In addition to the new regular classes, Sunflower Hill is adding a new monthly night program: Friday Night Live at Sunflower Hill. “We’re designing this as a fun way for participants to spend their Friday night with friends at Irby Ranch,” noted Christensen. The first session will be on Friday, March 7 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. Subsequent Friday Night Live dates include Friday, April 11 and Friday, May 16. All activities are open to Regional Center clients and any adult with I/DD in the community interested in social and vocational programming. The dates complement the RADD activity calendar. Friday Night Live Programs will center around a different theme each month, with outside entertainers, dinner, and fun activities. Cost is $25 per person and scholarships are available.
