UC admissions have long been a sore spot for many Californians, who have struggled to get into the schools despite high performance. Even with a 4.2 GPA and many Honors or AP courses, California students find themselves passed over in favor of international or out-of-state students.

So, you can bet I was excited to hear the UC’s plan to add 20,000 more students to the system by 2030. The impact would be similar to adding a whole new UC campus.

But there is a catch. How do the UCs plan to increase enrollment? Expanding online programs, summer programs, and enrollment at UC Merced & UC Riverside.

It is not entirely their fault, as they simply do not have the space for increased housing (or budgets to build enough housing) at the other campuses. The next best thing was a focus on online courses and summer courses.

As an introvert, I am a fan of online courses. However, I am not a fan of summer courses as you are expanding the time students must be taking courses and the costs as they now must pay for summer. Additionally, there is nowhere near the financial aid available for summer courses as there is for the normal school year.

I also anticipate an issue where certain courses are not offered in the summer, causing students to delay their progress by pursuing the year-round option.

Lastly, there is the issue of UC Merced and UC Riverside and plans to increase enrollment at those two schools. While I have nothing against these schools, they are simply not the ones that top Californian students wish to attend.
