RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, CA — Five people were recently arrested in connection with a burglary in which nearly $170,000 in merchandise was stolen from an Orange County business, according to police.

Authorities apprehended two people Friday after the New Year’s Day burglary in Rancho Santa Margarita, police said Tuesday. Both people were taken to jail, with one caught committing another crime at the time of the arrest, according to police, who said three more arrests were also made during the investigation.

The business reported a loss of $168,985 in merchandise, most of which was recovered and returned, police said.

“To help prevent crimes like this, business owners are reminded to turn on their alarm systems and ensure they are functioning properly,” Rancho Santa Margarita Police Services said in a social media post. “Additionally, consider registering or integrating your security camera system with Fusus through the Orange County Sheriff’s Department Camera Registry Program to add an extra layer of security for your businesses.”
