Strange Odor Prompts Evacuation of Redondo Beach Police Building

A strange, unknown smell prompted the evacuation of a Redondo Beach police building Wednesday morning.

REDONDO BEACH, CA — A strange odor noticed at a Redondo Beach police building prompted evacuations Wednesday morning, authorities announced.

At about 7:30 a.m., people at the Redondo Beach Police Department Annex Building in the 200 block of North Pacific Coast Highway detected an unusual smell. Personnel inside quickly evacuated the building and the Redondo Beach Fire Department arrived to investigate.

Redondo Beach authorities requested the help of the Los Angeles County Fire Department Hazardous Materials Division for the investigation. At this time, it is unknown what is causing the unusual smell.

"The evacuation included the Police Annex building and restricted access to the adjacent parking lot. No other buildings in the vicinity are affected," RBPD Captain Michael Martinez said.

The investigation is anticipated to last several hours, according to authorities.
