Cotati Farmers Market Launches Open Mic Night
The first of four open mic nights — aimed at giving local bands a chance to play live — launches tonight at La Plaza Park in Cotati.
The Cotati Farmers Market open mic night kicks off at 4:30 p.m. today — and it's the first of four being hosted by the Cotati Chamber of Commerce from now through September.
"We're trying to give bands an opportunity to perform in front of a live audience, it's something they might not otherwise have a chance to do," said Andre Morrow, president of the Cotati Chamber. "It's geared towards young people, but really anyone can come out."
The open mic series, which runs tonight, July 28, Aug. 25 and Sept. 15, aims to draw three musicians or bands each night, and each will have about 45 minutes on stage. But the times and number of performers aren't rigid.

"We're trying to find musicians at this point," said David Armstrong, the organizer for the event. "Artists can come out and sign up in a traditional open mic format, but ultimately we're trying to book them ahead of time."
Tonight's performance will feature local teen drummer Vincent Guzzeta, who is opening for a Sonoma County blues rock band called Urban Oasis.

"The idea is to help bands who are just getting started," Armstrong said. "They get a chance to get out of their shell, and we get to hear great music."
Editor's note: The Cotati Chamber will provide a base and guitar amp on stage, as well as drums and a microphone sound system.
