Worker Rescued After Falling info Confined Space on U.S. Naval Ship

Fire officials said the man has moderate injuries from his fall.

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — San Francisco firefighters worked to rescue a worker who fell into a confined space on a U.S. naval ship in dry dock in the city's Dogpatch neighborhood. The adult male victim, who is not a naval employee, was working on the U.S. Naval Ship Guadalupe at a private dry dock facility at 20th and Third streets when he lost his footing and fell 10 to 15 feet, according to fire department spokesman Jonathan Baxter.

Fire officials first reported the incident shortly before 3:30 p.m. The man has moderate injuries from his fall but is reported to be conscious and breathing, Baxter said. Firefighters conducted a confined space rescue, which means that personnel was lowered by rope to the victim and the victim was raised back out. The victim was taken to a trauma center.

Baxter said the space has no windows or ventilation and required monitoring to make sure it has sufficient air for both the victim and rescuers.
