Oakland International Airport Surpasses 1M Passengers

The passenger increase marks a milestone in COVID-19 recovery.

OAKLAND — Oakland International Airport, the main airport for the greater East Bay, the most populated area in the metropolitan San Francisco Bay area, has surpassed 1 million passengers, airport officials said.

The increase marks a major milestone in COVID-19 pandemic recovery following a rash of restrictions and shutdowns put into place by state and federal governments.

The announcement, made in a July 25, 2022, news release, said the airport saw 1,059,639 total passengers in June 2022 bringing the number of travelers up to 86.7% of pre-pandemic passenger levels compared to May 2019.

The number represents the highest return since December 2019 and shows a 15.4% month-to-month increase when compared to May 2022, and 29.9% compared to June 2021 when 815,935 passengers were carried.

“The recovery of passenger traffic at OAK remains strong, and we especially saw that in the month of June as we passed the 1 million passenger mark,” Port of Oakland Director of Aviation Bryant L. Francis said.

While air cargo showed a 3.8% decrease as compared to June 2021, the number of travelers continues to increase with 540,342 passengers departing from Oakland, with 89,285 of those passengers connecting from other flights, the airport reported.

“Based on performance seen so far this season, we expect this upward trend to continue through the balance of the summer travel season,” Francis said.
