Online Passport Renewal For All Americans Now Available

The new system launched this fall aims to streamline the process, reduce wait times, and improve accessibility.

CALIFORNIA — For California residents with trips planned for the holidays or next year, renewing your passport just got easier.

The U.S. Department of State announced the nationwide launch of its new online passport renewal system in September, enabling Americans to complete passport renewals online rather than through traditional mail-in forms.

The new service, accessible at Travel.State.Gov/renewonline, is part of an effort to modernize federal services and improve government accessibility.

The online platform allows users to submit their applications securely, reducing the time and effort of printing, mailing, and processing physical forms. According to the State Department, this digital option cuts routine passport processing times to nearly one-third of last summer’s wait, and well within the standard six to eight-week processing period.

"This new system reflects our commitment to making government services more accessible and efficient for all Americans," said a State Department spokesperson. They added that the service supports President Biden’s Executive Order on enhancing the customer experience and rebuilding public trust in government.
