The polls are closed in San Leandro, and voters have had their say on the sheriff, district attorney, and other key races.
SAN LEANDRO, CA — Yesenia Sanchez is the top vote getter for Alameda County Sheriff/Coroner over incumbent Gregory Ahern, according to preliminary data from Alameda County. With all 454 precincts counted and all mail-in ballots received through Tuesday tallied, Sanchez received 46.98 percent of the vote to Ahern's 36.32 percent. For the sheriff, district attorney, and other contested local races, if a candidate receives 50 percent of the vote plus one they will win outright. Otherwise, the top two vote-getters will face off on the November ballot.
For District Attorney, Pamela Price garnered 39.73 percent of tallied votes while Terry Wiley received 31.21 percent. The pair appear to be headed for a runoff election in November.

As of April, the California Secretary of State reported that 26,948,297 Californians were registered to vote, which accounts for almost 82 percent of the state's eligible voting population.
Not surprisingly, there are far more registered Democrats than Republicans in the state, with 46.75 percent for the former and 23.92 percent for the latter. GOP registration in the state has been dropping steadily, a trend that shows no sign of slowing down even as Republican registration climbed at the national level over the last year.
In Alameda County, 60.3 percent of registered voters are Democrats, 24.3 percent have no party preference, and 10.9 percent are Republican.
