San Leandro Hosts Culinary Black History Event Focusing On Oakland

Chef Wanda Blake will talk about the Great Migration's impact on Oakland through the lens of community and food at the San Leandro Library.

SAN LEANDRO, CA — Explore Black history through cuisine next month at a special event hosted at the San Leandro Main Library.

Spend the early evening of Feb. 18 with Chef Wanda Blake as she leads Taste of Legacy: Exploring Black History through Food and Oakland's Culinary Experience.

The program, held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., will take you through the Great Migration's impact on Oakland through the lens of community and food.

"There is a rich Black culinary history in our own backyard," event organizers wrote.

Blake will explore the story of the West Oakland Train Station, which was a hub for the underpaid and overworked Pullman Porters. While they served in elite dining cars, the Oakland community expanded to support Black families and businesses.

"From Slim Jenkins restaurant, Housewives Market, to the Black Panther Free Breakfast Program. Discover the vibrant culinary traditions that have shaped Oakland’s Black history," according to the library.

Light refreshments will be served at the event, which is free for all to attend.
